Game Highlights:
Championship games don't get much more exciting than seen between the Briarwood A's and Sunnyvale National Tigers this past Friday night. Strong defensive and pitching skills by both teams made this a hard earned 1-0 win for the A's at the bottom of the 6th.

A's Pitcher Erik Ratta opened the game, but quickly shut the Tigers down 1-2-3 to close the top of the 1st inning. At the bottom of the 1st inning, Brandon Lockett of the A's landed a two base hit to put Bobby Santos in scoring position on 3rd. But Tigers pitcher Liam Hanlon successfully closed the bottom of the inning to keep the A's scoreless.

The Tigers line-up brought five players to the plate at the top of the 2nd. But two strikeouts and a major league catch by A's center fielder Brandon Lockett snatched away a beautiful hit by Devin Williams to close off the Tigers chances of scoring in the 3rd inning. At the bottom of the inning A's batter Erik Ratta got the first hit of the game and was able to make it to 3rd with the help of batter Kevin Chitwood's sacrifice out at first. The A's once again brought runners to 2nd and 3rd, however Hanlon shut down their hopes and again left the A's with players on base and no runs scored.

Nina Flota of the Tigers came to the plate with two outs and nobody on at the top of the 3rd inning, drilling the only hit of the third inning into left field. Quick recovery by the A's fielders made her reconsider her thoughts of taking a second base. But the pitching skills of Ratta closed the inning down, stranding Nina on first. Four A's batters came to the plate at the bottom of the 3rd, but once again Hanlon dumped the A's back into their dugout hitless and scoreless.

Things got exciting in the 4th, with Tigers pitcher Dean Otska taking over for Hanlon. With bases loaded with green jerseys and three outs, Brian Silveira tapped a hard ground ball to Otska, which bounced off his glove and struck him in the eye, but he maintained his poise to deliver the ball to first and close the inning once again scoreless. Otska went into the 5th inning with a beauty mark below his eye to show he took one for his team. Way to go, Dean!

The Tigers most promising chance to score came at the top of the fifth. A's pitcher Erik Ratta was starting to show the mileage of 79 pitches and was relieved by Kevin Chitwood. Chitwood came to the mound with Liam Hanlon on 3rd and only one out. Batter Oscar Perea took advantage of the new pitcher by landing a base hit, but trapping Hanlon on 3rd. Chitwood came up to speed quickly, demonstrating his talents by shutting down the following two Tigers and leaving the Tigers scoreless once again.

Coming into the final inning the A's quickly kept the Tigers scoreless once more by only allowing four batters to the plate. But at the bottom of the 6th, the Tigers inserted pitcher Anthony Pozzetti. A's base runner Patrick Vargas and James Music were able to put themselves on 2nd and 3rd with no outs. A's batter Bobby Santos stepped up to take a ball on the first pitch, but caught the Tigers by surprise on the second pitch with a well placed bunt half way along the right base line allowing A's base-runner Patrick Vargas to swoop in to score the winning run.

Congratulations to A's for their persistence and well executed game - and to the Tigers for an excellent game and season.

Leading Hitters:

Westside: Jordan Ambrose (2-3, 2 doubles, 2 RBI)

Briarwood: Marcos Cervantes (2-3, double, 2 RBI); Bobby Santos (2-3, 2 runs)

Game Highlights:

Championships are expected to be exciting, and this game certainly delivered. Briarwood shortstop Bobby Santos led off the game with a bunt single, and was sacrificed over by third baseman Nick Garcia. A nice RBI single to right field by pitcher Marcos Cervantes scored Santos - this was to be the only score of the first four innings. Westside starter Robert Gaylord quickly found his groove, retiring 13 of the next 15 batters he faced and issuing only one walk and one hit batsman.

Offensively, Westside produced several baserunners with walks and an error, but were unable to capitalize as Briarwood Starter Marcos Cervantes and crew retired 9 of 14 in the first 3 innings with 4 strikeouts, nice putouts by first baseman Hailey Thompson from shortstop Bobby Santos and second baseman Jairus Baddo, and a beautiful diving catch by center fielder Patrick Vargas to end the third.

First baseman Jordan Ambrose started the Westside fourth with a nice double to right. A wild pitch advanced Ambrose to third, but Briarwood catcher Erik Ratta was able to quickly recover another wild pitch and caught Ambrose heading for home for the second out. Briarwood reliever Kevin Chitwood then walked one but retired the side on a 9-3 putout with runners at the corners.

Briarwood had a brief two-out rally in the fifth, with singles by Erik Ratta, Brian Silveira, and Kevin Chitwood - who drove in Ratta for the second run of the game. Mets reliever Byron Esquivel then struck out the last Briarwood batter of the fifth and three of four batters in the sixth.

It was again Westside's turn to generate excitement in the bottom of the sixth, when catcher Sam Leahy was issued a leadoff walk and stole second - the only stolen base of the game. A walk of center fielder Christopher Keith and a subsequent wild pitch set the table with runners on second and third and one out. Jordan Ambrose delivered, scoring both runners with his second double of the day to deep center field, tying the game 2-2 and putting the potential winning run on second. An intentional walk put pitcher Esquivel aboard, still with only one out. But Chitwood held the line with a strikeout and a 1-3 putout to keep the A's in the game.

Bobby Santos led off the Briarwood seventh with a single to shallow left and advanced to second on a fielder's choice. Marcos Cervantes then broke the tie with a clutch RBI double to right, scoring Santos. Esquivel struck out one, walked two, and then retired Briarwood with the bases loaded, holding the A's lead to one run.

There was hope for Westside when a walk of Jeffrey Plymale put the potential tying run aboard with only one out, but Chitwood was able to strike out the next two to secure the championship. Final score: A's 3, Mets 2. Congratulations to both teams for an exciting and well-played finish to an outstanding season.
