Championship Game
Game #13
Date: 6/23/08
Played at: Edward J. Freitas Field
Host League: Moreland Little League
Reported by: Dave DeCarlo

Santa Clara Homestead Yankees 000000 063
Santa Clara Briarwood Pirates 40040X 850
SC Briarwood Pirates win 8-0
Winning Pitcher: Garrett Ciuk, 5 1/3 innings, 6 hits, 14 K's
Losing Pitcher: Spencer Erdman, 5 innings, 5 hits, 6 K's
Home runs:
Nico O'Donnell, SC Briarwood Pirates
Anthony Aguilar, SC Briarwood Pirates
Game highlights:
After retiring the Yankees batters 1-2-3 in the top of the 1st, Garrett Ciuk led off the Briarwood 1st by being hit by a pitch. Three batters later, Ciuk scored on a single by Stephen Jaramillo. Homestead pitcher Spencer Erdman then struck out his second batter of the inning, but then Nico O'Donnell belted a three-run home run to clear the bases.
The second and third innings were very well pitched by both Ciuk and Erdman, with 9 of the 12 batters out on strikes, each giving up one hit, but allowing no runs to score.
The top of the 4th looked like more of the same with the first two Homestead hitters out on strikes. Consecutive hits by John Antonicic, Chris Hegarty, and Morgan Saenz looked promising for Homestead, but Briarwood held them back, with Ciuk striking out the next batter to end the threat. Briarwood responded quickly with batters reaching on an error, a fielder's choice, and a single to load the bases. Anthony Aguilar then unloaded on a pitch for a grand slam. Homestead managed leadoff hits in both the 5th and the 6th by Ben Fales and Andrew Scott, respectively, but Ciuk added three more strikeouts to his 14 total Ks. Stephen Jaramillo finished the game for Ciuk, retiring the last two batters of the game.
The Santa Clara Briarwood Pirates win the District 44 Majors TOC title. Congratulations to Briarwood, and to the Santa Clara Homestead Yankees for a well-played game!
